Risk factors and prevention of type 2 diabetes

The good news is that research has shown type 2 diabetes can be prevented in up to 58% of cases.

You cannot change risk factors like your:

  • age - the older you get the more likely you are to get diabetes
  • family history - type 2 diabetes is strongly in the family
  • history of gestational diabetes
  • history of cardiovscular disease.

You can change your lifestyle risk factors by:

  • achieving and maintaining a healthy weight - especially around your waist
  • being physically active
  • following a healthy balanced eating plan - eat plenty of vegetables and high fibre cereal products and use a mimum amount of fat and oils.

Your lifestyle choices can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Changing your lifestyle is not easy to do on your own. Joining a course will give you a much greater chance of success.
